CUBA

This is an exciting time to visit Cuba while it is still largely unspoiled and real. Cuba is a melting pot which contributes to the richness of the country's literature, poetry, dance, songs and dramatic arts. It is a land of color - from classic cars, to the different hues of houses to the local people. Its people are gregarious, hospitable, outgoing, vivacious, exhibiting joie de vivre. Most societies seem to need a group of people on whom they can look down upon. While that may exist in Cuban society, we saw no evidence of it and as a socialist country we did not witness any discernible conflict between different peoples. There also seemed to be job equality between the genders. There is a progress on the rights of and respect for sexual minorities. In the past, life was not easy for homosexuals and other sexual minorities as they were often hauled off to prisons and psychiatric places. Raoul Castro's daughter, Mariela, a member of the legislative parliament and Director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education has made the protection of their rights and their acceptance a principal focus of her efforts. Many think that in this socialist country in transition, progress will be slow. However, we think that with the American embargo lifted, it will be faster than many people suspect. One can only hope that the rich culture and uniqueness of Cuba will not be diminished by such progress.
